About Us |
| Although the Society has been in existence for many years, it is only in the past 6 years that the Group, born out of the embers of Valley Arts, at which many of our members met, has flourished and increased in member- ship to its present healthy state. A very informal Group of Artists gather together weekly at the Sudellside Community Centre in Darwen to paint, discuss and encourage each other, and help other members newly joined in the techniques and joy of painting. The Darwen Art Society has grown in numbers from a small membership of less than a dozen, and now runs a day time class in two sessions for around 30 members and is limited only through lack of room. Although most members paint purely for pleasure, in all types of media, there is professional and artistic help to aid and en- courage when required. The Society also has a workshop or outing on the last Sunday in each month. Many professional artists have shared their talents and inspiration at these meetings and have encouraged our artists to much improved and better standards of work than ever before. On the occasions when Professionals are not available to demonstrate or lead a workshop, then the Group take a tour of some of the larger and better known Galleries, especially those holding exhibitions. These have taken in `Turner`, `Klimt`, `Da Vinci`, `William Frith Powell` and many others. The Society holds Exhibitions at local venues at least once a year, and reviews of the skill and standard of work, have been exceptional. The Society is open to all abilities and invites anyone in the area who wishes to join the Group, to come along and visit. The Group meet on a Monday at the Sudellside Community Centre, Sudellside Street, Darwen between 10am and 4pm. |
